FETN recognises that personal tutoring is central to learner success, and that effective tutoring promotes learner progress, enables learners to develop their personal, social and employability skills and helps in addressing individual learning and support needs.
Raising the profile of this essential role lies at the heart of what we do. We are aware of how important it is for personal tutors to feel recognised and valued and this is why the FETN Professional Recognition Scheme has been developed collaboratively with FETN member institutions.
Referenced against the National Occupational Standards for Personal Tutoring the Professional Recognition Scheme provides you with a valuable opportunity to evidence your practice against the requisite skills and competencies for the role, and to identify opportunities for continuous professional development.
Levels of Recognition
The FETN Professional Recognition for Tutorial Practitioners is now available. The Advanced Tutor Practitioner and the Leader in Tutoring recognition will be made available shortly.
Practitioner in Tutoring
Designed for personal tutoring practitioners, this level of recognition demonstrates individual understanding and application of a broad range of effective approaches in delivering high-quality personal tutoring to individual learners.
Advanced Practitioner in Tutoring
This is designed to recognise Personal Tutors who demonstrate excellent tutoring skills and have a significantly positive impact on their learners’ progress and development. As Advanced Tutoring Practitioners they will be expected to demonstrate how they contribute to the quality of tutoring and support colleagues to improve their tutoring practice.
Leader in Tutoring
This recognition is aimed at highly experienced personal tutors who can demonstrate excellent tutoring skills, provide support for others in their tutoring role, and make a significant impact on the quality of tutorial provision and practice at departmental or organisational level.
Applications for Professional Recognition are made by submitting a portfolio of evidence, referencing their practice against the competencies of the National Occupational Standards for Personal Tutoring.
The application process is designed to be developmental. Completing the portfolio of evidence provides applicants with the opportunity to reflect on their practice and plan for further professional development. A portfolio guide is provided to help candidates to prepare for successful submission.
Submitted applications are independently assessed by experienced practitioners in the field, all of whom hold FETN Professional Recognition themselves. Having reviewed the application you will be advised of the outcome from one of the following:
- The level of recognition applied for is granted
- Applicant is advised to revise their application and resubmit
- Recognition at a lower level is granted with the option to revise and resubmit to attain the desired level of recognition
Where the applicant is advised to revise and resubmit their portfolio they will have six weeks to submit for re-assessment.
