This is a day of two halves. The morning will focus on how to improve the quality and impact of 1:1 reviews and target setting to aid learner progress. The afternoon will concentrate on strategies to make group tutorial more interactive and engaging in order to improve engagement and learning.
1:1 Reviews and Target Setting
Learners place a high value on effective 1:1s when they are able to discuss issues pertinent to their progress and explore strategies to move forward. The review process contains a number key stages which will be explored in the context of ‘what is an outstanding review’. In addition we will strip back the notion of target setting in order to make the activity more meaningful and to achieve greater impact.
Group Tutorial Session
Sometimes students turn up to group tutorials expecting an easier time than in their academic or vocational lessons – maybe there will be a group discussion they can opt in or out of, or the tutor will simply pass on essential information. The best group tutorials however, like the best lessons, require learners to be actively engaged, curious, challenged and clear about the relevance of what they are learning.
During this session we will explore a range of strategies to facilitate dynamic, interactive group tutorials that promote engagement and deep learning, so that students are equipped to deal with all the important learning, life and citizenship issues essential to effective tutorials.
